What: A charming reminder of what every small-town Canadian used to do at Christmastime, the subterranean space near the Vancouver Art Gallery entrance is transformed into a bustling little ice rink every winter; a perfect family-friendly activity if you have kids you need to tire out before bedtime. If you have your own skates, use of the rink is free (arrive off-peak to avoid the crowds); if not, skates can be rented for $5 (cash only). Add hot chocolate from the stand to warm you up and you'll be set for a fun downtown activity. It's even open on Christmas Day (noon to 5pm) if you need to work off that turkey tummy.
When: December 1, 2019 to February 29, 2020 (9am-9pm Sunday to Thursday; 9am-11pm Friday & Saturday)
Where: Corner of Robson Street and Howe Street, Vancouver
Cost: Free entry and free skating (with your own skates); $5 rental fee if you need skates
